South Africa’s electoral landscape is becoming increasingly competitive, with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) confirming that the number of registered political parties has increased from 508 to 620 as preparations for the 2026 Local Government Elections gather momentum. The growth reflects continued interest from new political movements seeking to contest municipal elections later this year.
The IEC provided the update while briefing the media on its state of readiness ahead of the upcoming national voter registration weekend, describing the registration drive as a critical milestone in the country’s election programme. The Commission said the registration weekend offers eligible South Africans a final opportunity to register, verify their voting details and update their residential addresses before the elections.
According to the Commission, preparations are well advanced, with voting stations, electoral staff and support systems being finalised to ensure the registration process runs smoothly across the country. The IEC has also encouraged voters to use its online services to check their registration status and make any necessary updates before election day.
Election officials say the increase in registered political parties highlights South Africa’s vibrant democratic environment, although only parties that meet all legal and electoral requirements will appear on the final ballot paper. The Commission continues to work with political parties, government departments and other stakeholders to ensure the elections are conducted in a free, fair and credible manner.
With voter registration campaigns underway and election preparations entering their final stages, the IEC has urged all eligible South Africans to participate in the registration weekend and ensure they are correctly registered to vote in their respective wards.
