Latest Weather Update: Frost, Fog and Cold Conditions Continue Across South Africa

South Africa remains firmly in the grip of winter, with cold morning temperatures, widespread frost and patches of fog continuing to affect several inland provinces. While no major national severe weather warnings have been issued at the time of publication, weather conditions remain hazardous in some areas during the early morning hours due to reduced visibility and freezing temperatures.

The latest outlook indicates that a strong high-pressure system continues to dominate much of the country’s weather pattern. This system is producing clear overnight skies, allowing temperatures to drop sharply after sunset and creating favourable conditions for frost development across parts of the Free State, North West, Northern Cape and high-lying areas of Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

Motorists travelling during the early morning hours are being urged to exercise caution. Frost-covered roads, particularly on bridges and elevated sections, can become slippery, while patches of fog may significantly reduce visibility in some regions. Similar conditions have repeatedly affected the interior during recent winter weather events.

Frost Remains the Main Concern
The Free State remains one of the provinces most affected by frost conditions, with temperatures regularly dropping close to or below freezing before sunrise. Similar conditions are expected in parts of the North West and Northern Cape, where farmers continue monitoring the impact on crops and livestock. Frost has become a recurring feature of the winter season across South Africa’s central interior.

City Forecast
Johannesburg – Cold start with temperatures remaining low during the morning before sunny conditions develop later in the day.
Pretoria – Cool morning conditions followed by clear skies and pleasant afternoon temperatures.
Cape Town – Mild and partly cloudy conditions expected, with no major weather disruptions currently forecast.
Durban – Fine and pleasant weather is expected, although occasional coastal cloud remains possible.
Bloemfontein – Cold morning temperatures with frost expected in some areas before conditions improve during the afternoon.
Gqeberha – Cool coastal conditions continue, with moderate temperatures and periods of cloud cover.

Weekend Outlook
Forecast models suggest that the current winter weather pattern will continue through the weekend. Most of South Africa is expected to remain dry, with cold mornings and sunny afternoons dominating conditions across the interior.
The Western Cape may experience periods of cloud cover and cooler coastal conditions as weather systems continue moving south of the country. However, no significant widespread rainfall events are currently anticipated. Along parts of the coastline, marine users should continue monitoring conditions, particularly where stronger winds and rough seas may occasionally develop.

Weather experts note that August traditionally brings some of the coldest mornings of the year across South Africa, and current forecasts suggest that winter’s grip is likely to persist for at least the next several days. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official South African Weather Service updates as conditions evolve.
