A light aircraft crash-landed near the intersection of New Road and the R101 in Glen Austin, Midrand, on Tuesday afternoon, injuring two people on board and causing significant traffic disruptions in the area. The incident also reportedly led to a secondary motor vehicle accident as emergency responders rushed to the scene.

According to emergency services, the incident occurred at approximately 15:00 on Tuesday when a light aircraft carrying two occupants came down on the R101 near New Road. The aircraft narrowly missed a pedestrian on the ground during the emergency landing, avoiding what could have been a far more serious tragedy.

The CERT Centurion crew was among the first emergency responders dispatched to the scene following reports of the aircraft incident. Upon arrival, rescue personnel discovered that members of the public had already stepped in to assist.

A bystander who happened to be passing the area reportedly acted quickly and courageously by helping both occupants out of the damaged aircraft before emergency services arrived. This rapid intervention allowed medical treatment to begin sooner and may have helped prevent further complications for the injured occupants.
Paramedics assessed and treated both patients at the scene before arranging transport to hospital. One occupant sustained moderate injuries while the second suffered minor injuries. Both were transported by Netcare 911 to receive further medical care.

Initial reports indicated that emergency authorities were still working to verify the full circumstances surrounding the incident and assess whether anyone on the ground had been injured. No fatalities were reported.
The crash resulted in major traffic congestion along the busy R101 corridor. Authorities temporarily closed the R101 between Grand Central Boulevard and New Road in the direction of Centurion while emergency services, investigators and aviation specialists worked at the scene. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

Emergency teams from multiple agencies coordinated the response, including Vision Tactical, the South African Police Service (SAPS), Netcare 911, ER24, FIRE OPS SA, City of Johannesburg EMS, Fire and Rescue Grand Central Airport, SAPS Airwing, SAPS Highway Patrol, Ria Sebetsa Security Services, Axon Security, Emer-G-Med and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).

Emergency responders praised members of the public who assisted during the critical first moments after the crash. Officials said the quick actions of the bystander who helped extract the occupants demonstrated exceptional courage and community spirit.
While the exact cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed, aviation authorities and other relevant agencies have launched an investigation. Investigators will examine the aircraft, weather conditions, flight history, pilot actions and any technical factors that may have contributed to the emergency landing.

Aircraft incidents on roads are relatively rare in South Africa, making Tuesday’s crash a significant event for both aviation authorities and local emergency services. The fact that the aircraft narrowly missed pedestrians and vehicles has raised questions about how much worse the outcome could have been had the crash occurred during heavier traffic conditions.

Authorities are expected to release further information once the investigation progresses and additional details become available.
