A truck driver narrowly escaped death after a truck reportedly plunged into the sea at Coega Port in the Eastern Cape, triggering an emergency response at one of South Africa’s busiest port facilities. The incident occurred at the Port of Ngqura, adjacent to the Coega Special Economic Zone near Gqeberha, with the driver managing to escape from the vehicle before it became submerged. The incident has raised questions about the circumstances that led to the truck entering the water and has prompted an investigation by the relevant authorities.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene after reports that a heavy vehicle had entered the water within the port precinct. Initial information indicates that the truck ended up in the sea while operating in the port area, although the exact sequence of events leading to the incident remains under investigation.

Fortunately, the driver was able to escape from the cab before the vehicle sank and was rescued without suffering life-threatening injuries. The incident could easily have resulted in a fatality, particularly given the risks associated with submerged vehicles and the strong currents often present in port environments.

Authorities are expected to examine several factors, including operational procedures, vehicle movement within the port, weather conditions at the time of the incident and whether any mechanical failure may have contributed to the accident. Port safety officials and investigators will also review available surveillance footage and witness statements.

The Port of Ngqura, located within the Coega industrial development zone outside Gqeberha, is South Africa’s deepest container port and serves as a major logistics gateway for imports and exports. Daily operations involve the movement of large volumes of cargo, heavy trucks and industrial equipment, making safety a critical priority.

While incidents involving vehicles entering the water at South African ports are relatively rare, maritime and transport safety experts have repeatedly warned that port environments present unique hazards. Limited manoeuvring space, heavy equipment, loading operations and proximity to deep water require strict adherence to safety procedures.

Recovery operations are expected to focus on removing the submerged truck from the water while ensuring minimal disruption to port activities. Environmental officials may also assess whether any fuel, oil or cargo entered the sea as a result of the incident.
No other injuries were immediately reported, and authorities are expected to release further details once the investigation progresses.
