Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on one of the greatest national team careers in the history of the sport. The 39-year-old Argentina captain confirmed his decision on Monday, 31 August 2026, just weeks after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. The announcement has sparked an emotional reaction across the football world, with fans, players, coaches and former teammates paying tribute to a player widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time.
Messi made the announcement through a heartfelt social media message in which he reflected on more than two decades representing Argentina. He described the decision as painful but said he felt he had given everything possible to the national team and that the time had come to step aside.
His retirement closes an extraordinary international career that began in 2005 and spanned 21 years. During that period, Messi became Argentina’s most capped player with 207 appearances and its all-time leading goalscorer with 125 goals. He also recorded dozens of assists and helped guide Argentina through one of the most successful eras in the nation’s football history.
For many years, Messi faced criticism for failing to win a major international trophy despite dominating club football with Barcelona. Argentina suffered heartbreak in the 2014 FIFA World Cup final and lost successive Copa América finals, leading Messi to briefly retire from international football in 2016 before later reversing his decision.
The defining chapter of his international career arrived in 2021 when Argentina won the Copa América, ending a long trophy drought and silencing many critics. Messi then cemented his legacy by leading Argentina to FIFA World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022, one of the most celebrated triumphs in football history. Argentina added another Copa América title in 2024, further strengthening Messi’s standing among the sport’s all-time greats.
Although Argentina fell short in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final against Spain, Messi’s performances throughout the tournament were widely praised. Even at the age of 39, he remained one of the competition’s standout players and helped carry Argentina to another World Cup final.
The announcement has dominated football discussions worldwide. Supporters across social media have been sharing memories of Messi’s greatest moments, from his dazzling dribbles and iconic goals to his emotional World Cup celebrations in 2022. Many football fans view the retirement as the end of an era that defined modern football for more than two decades.
While Messi is stepping away from international football, his playing career is not yet over. He is expected to continue playing club football with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, where he remains one of the biggest attractions in world sport.
Few athletes have left a mark on their sport as profound as Messi’s. From a teenage prodigy in Argentina to a global football icon, his journey has inspired millions around the world. His retirement from the international stage marks the end of a remarkable chapter, but his influence on football is likely to endure for generations.
For Argentina, attention will now turn to the next generation of players tasked with carrying forward the legacy built during Messi’s era. Replacing a player of his stature may be impossible, but his achievements have set a benchmark that future stars will strive to match.
After this time that has passed since the final, thinking about it a lot, I want to inform everyone that I am retiring from the National Team…
It was a decision that hurt and still hurts in the soul, but I understand that it’s the right time. I swear I always gave everything, not just the last few years when I won everything before that too, and I always fought and gave everything for this jersey, to bring them joy and make them proud to be Argentinians through football.

Journal entry:
There’s not much left and stages are closing, and this one hurts me a lot. I love, loved, and will always love being in the National Team. I’ve emptied myself, I no longer have anything left to give, and besides, there are very big kids coming up who deserve to be there.
Thank you for all the love over these 20 years. I’m going to miss hearing from you from the inside a lot. Now I’m going to be one of you, always cheering and supporting from the outside (in the good times and the bad, even more).
Thanks to my family for always being there, for accompanying me on this beautiful but difficult journey. Thanks to each of the coaches, teammates, and leaders I had the chance to share with. I take away memories and unforgettable moments lived.
I’m leaving with the peace of mind and pride of having given them, together with my colleagues, the moments they dreamed of. It was crazy to have lived it with you. I love you!
Thank God for making me Argentine.
Go Argentina!
*I wrote these words on July 21, two days after the final. Today, after what happened to my dad, I’m more convinced than ever.
